Blaxploitation

I came across something very interesting, and as usual, i assumed that not alot of other people out there would know about it either (since i believe the world revolves around me, and what i do, they do-hahah no im kidding)

Blaxploitation: Film genre originating from the U.S in the 70's when many exploitation films were made to target an audience of Urban Black people. (wiki)

Basically in other words, its movies, tv shows, etc. racist-ly, purely based on all things African American-black. But see its not racist since, its black people acting like black people, directed by black people, about the culture of black people...makes sense!
i mean if other people can make movies/tv shows based on their own popular culture, then why cant black people..and considering, in the last 10-20 years(or more) black culture is the coolest of cool's of all culture..am i right?
Its litrally embedded itself into all the other cultures..dance,music, vandalism(i know thats not cultural(doesnt define a society) but its also in a very racist generalization attached directly to the african americans)

Starting in 1965, with movies like,
Guess whose coming to dinner, Sidney Poitier paved the road for African Americans penetrating the predominantly white culture in movies, and sending a message that the black and white cultures CAN Cross paths.
This helped open doors that let other Black actors, composers, musicians come out and work side by side with the white culture, bringing with them their own touch of the GREAT talent AND a new age of movies and music with strong 'Political meaning'. Other artists like
Funkadelic, James brown, Sly's multiracial Family Stone, etc. all composed music with serious political messages and the RnB charts popularity showed that the people liked it.

Then by the 1970's Other famous Black talent emerged, with
Bill Cosby, Richard Pryo, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, etc. Movies which proved predominantly focussing on the Black Culture, featuring soundtracks of Funk, Soul, Rap, etc. and starring mostly Black actors, target marketing to a black audience were soon made commercial. The subject matter in these movies, was of interest to the Black people, portraying their African American culture..

..BUT as usual, since human beings tend to be so judgemental and sensitive, such films were accused of stereo typing the black population, especially with content of
pimps, drugs, dealers, etc.
Speaking of pimps, drugs and BIG hair, if you havnt ever come across any blaxploitation movie-firstly kill yourself secondly here are some suggestions, of the kinds you can watch.. (mostly funny, i put an asterix next to the REALLY good ones)
Foxy Brown
Pootie Tang *
UnderCover Brother *
Dr. Black and MR. Hyde
Blacula (dont laugh-its actually a movie, i googled it)
You want the serious stuff, watch Hero Ain't nothing but a Sandwich, (a movie about a 13 year olds drug addiction and how his mother and her boyfriend help him fight it)

believe it or not..NOT Ripleys..

Sometimes i think, WHERE the hell do i find this stuff?!

Warning: The following might bewilder, amuse, disgust and leaving you thinking...No frikkin Way!

Everyones favorite feminist, through the times, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Its a legendary tale thats been passed along for decades, and popular belief states that they convicted her of heresay, becuase they had nothing on her.
NOT REALLY. i read somewhere that the prosecutor tried very hard to get her on heresay..but he had nothing, then he asked her is she ever dressed like a man, while in battle..and without thinking she said yes-didnt really want to lie..and that got her slapped with the death penalty for, dig this..TRANSVESTISM..haha it was against God's law, and hence she was convicted and burned to death.

In 2006 at different london underground stations(i forget which ones) people gathered with their ipods/mp3's and at a certain time started dancing to their own tunes..this is popularly known as a Flash Mob. Its when a large group of people get together suddenly and perform a random act together..and then disperse.

Dolphins everyones friendly fishies..NOT REALLY!
There are certain species of Dolphin that are quite ill-tempered. Some even kill their own young..for resoms beyond us! People say Dolphins are most like humans(besides the apes monkeys blah) they 'do it' for pleasure, not just coz its the natural thing to do..they have anger management issues, and are even more curious then most animals, which lands them into crap-loads of trouble(remind us of something)
Heres when it gets proper weird..aparently some dolphins are SO curious that they have tried to mate with people wandering by in the water! I know..right!!!! like WHAT?
dont believe me? (
http://www.sexwork.com/family/dolphinrape.html
- its also on wiki but i though this has more of an impact..no?)
what im thinking here is..Firstly, why havnt they made a move on crazy-horny-psycho-dolphins..they keep showing happy flipper shit that gives people the idea that theyr friendly and then they get attacked. Secondly, am i the only one whos wondering just HOW much like the humans these dolphins really are..sick!

Do any of you know why Red wine is red and White wine is white? popular belief is that red wine comes from red grapes, and white comes from white grapes..NOT REALLY!
Some of the best white wine is actually made from red grapes. The answer my good people lies in the skin of the grape..the colour in wine(red) comes from the skin of the grape whereas, white wine is made from just teh grape pulp.

'nuff said.. now go digest!

Fits of Passion

Dont worry this is not an X-rated blog..hopefully! :P

(before i begin-im not a very vain person, im self-centered to the point that most people are, and i dont usually toot my own horn(twss*)- but i thought before i go ranting any further i might clear up a few things..
Im a very passionate person (stop laughing)..in a slightly more obsessive type of way! when i get passionate about something, i tend to obsess over it for a while, till i get distracted and move onto something newer, shinier and more suiting my forever changing tastes.
Who doesnt? maybe not as bad as me..but i know you do too!
my dad calls me 'a dreamer'..il randomly wake up and crave waffles, want to buy something like white suspenders(madonna like), etc. you get what i mean!

So i came up with a list..of my 'SECRET passions'..that not everybody knows about!
who knows maybe you share my loves..

Shakespeare..yes alot of people like his work, most hate it thanks to o level literature..but the man was a genius! i Love how his work was more then just stories, it was emotions, life, death, revenge, forgiveness, and a number of cliche's- but mind you, think of it this way..this guy came way before freud or any other psychologiests shedding any light on the science of emotions and the human mind. Pure genius.

Weird Facts..i heart weird facts..i can spend hours (usually without realizing) reading up weird facts..recently i read a 5 page paper on social ettiquetes and then found another write-up on table manners..i now know what spoon goes where and is used for what part of a seven course meal..am i preparing to dine with the queen? nop but its cool stuff to know!
my next reading(when i get the time) is to read up on coffee..iv always wondered about coffee!

Classical orchestra type music in movies/cartoons..listen carefully to the background music for Kate and Leopold, youve got mail, Breakfast at tiffanys..See not neccesarily really old movies, just romantic/romantic comedies, sometimes have beautiful music! (post abooot that ltr)
Seen Fantasia? Perfect example.
Havnt seen it? ...Go Kill yourself!! What sort of a childhood did you have?

Rice and ketchup..and Rice in soup for that matter...i LOVE!
it used to be my when-your-bored-and-theres-no-food-you-like-in-the-fridge. yes! it may sound gross but it tastes amazing! And if u think im pushing it with rice and ketchup, then you should Definitley try out the rice in soup(preferably chicken corn soup)-trust me!!!

and as of last night..

Randomness..i love thinking about the fact that some movies came up about from the stupidest ideas..
exhibit A: sisterhood of the travelling pants 1&2..so the writer was sitting one day staring at his jeans..decided to write about them..and beautifully turned it into a tale of 4 young girls becoming women and learning the harsh realities of life, love and friendship! hahahah (i know i sound gay but think about how cool it is, that he based it all from -JEANS..how random!)

I also really enjoy Retro Hits quite a bit! Much to my sisters dismay and constant rolling-of-the-eyes. She insists that im young but have an old spirit. Well im sorry the world has LOST the sense of passion, love and emotion-replaced by cheap rip-offs embedded in 'emoticons' and cheezy 'romantic-trying-to-hard-comedies'..make me sick..thoooo!

eh!

Reality Bites!

How cool would it be if i got a full time job doing something i love doing-listening to music, watching movies and TV and being as lazy as i can be..and then it hit me..i can, because there are jobs out there made for ppl like me..but then i thought (i think too much right?) i cant..

Reasons why i wouldnt make a good entertainment critic(music movies tv)

Im selfish...atleast i admit it!
True life. i will probably only listen to the music; watch the movies and tv shows that i want to watch or i can bare to watch.. you pay me i wont watch an entire season of black adder(even though everyone goes on and on about it). Plus I only want to talk about stuff that i like or i dont like.. its alwys 'I', 'me', 'my'..but then again its MY blog and I will talk about whatever ME wants :)

I know nothing about heavy metal, hard rock, death metal, hardcore house music..so even if i do(by some miracle) end up listening to it i doubt id be any sort pf authority on it to go about critiqing it. So il let the experts of those genres do it!

I try real hard BUT i cannot get myself to watch indian movies-unless absolutely forced to..and a part of being a critic is to be able to critique ANY and Every form of entertainment..right? well atleast try to..but i know in this area im not even going to try :P there are probably a handful of indian movies that iv seen(i can litrally count on my fingers) and those are the generic-every-burger-watches-them, ones..[Example: Dil chahta hai, wakeupSid, and as of recently 3 Idiots]

I cant really watch chinese fighter movies either..the terrible Dub over and cheeesy storylines irritate me and the fast movements give me a headache! iv never really thought about why i dont like anime...but i know i dont! I cant sit through 2 mins of it..Lord knows i tried!

Am i alone on this one?! ..Please tell me im not a freak and i dont hate everything..a friend just told me im a hater..
well not in such few words, but basically i was told that all i talk about(lately) is things i dont like and cant stand..
hmm Im not like that..am i?
Or am i just being too hard on myself..
Mybe i could be a good entertainment critic...(if there is even such a designation-entertainment critic-doesnt sound right)

*for the record, i love life, my life..im grateful, gratious and very very thankful for the life i have! this hating/not liking is all on the surface..im content on the inside! :) just thought id put it out there :P

The Grammy's

More like the Grannies..MAN was i the only one disappointed agian and again?
i mean apart from maybe one or two CRAZY things that CRAZY artists did while performing the entire night was pretty forgettable..
(now i ddint even watch all of it, so correct me if im wrong)

Let me start by going over what DID amuze me:
Lady GaGa's attire!

Beyonce's performance where she falls to her knees and channels the spirits of the Akh tu tu tribe doing the crazy rain dance!

Pink swirling round and round off a curtain, splashing water(which one of my freinds, who tuned in at that moment, thought was her pissing on the audience) from almost 4 stories high up in the air..ohh all the while wearing, what looked like seat belts covering, well nothing!

Parts that made me yawn profusely, doze off, and get pisssy at:
Taylor Swift...RUINED her performance with stevie nicks..she killed it, litrally! she was nazal and obnoxious and took centre stage leaving a legend playing tamborine in the background which really pissed me off! and she took home what 4 awards(out of whic she probably deserved half-of an award)

Beyonce winning 6 out of the 10 she was nominated in didnt make me happy either..i mean shes good, got great vocals but is mostly psycho! And she didnt deserve awards like Song of the year-which should have gone to Poker Face..and what the hell is Best Traditional RnB vocal performance award..?! stoooopid!

AND OMG i cant believe Jai HO won AGAIN!!! im sooo SICK of that damn over rated movie..even if the pussycat dolls sang along and made a slutty dance on it..it does not deserve THAT much hype!!

Recent obsessions (part2)

I think i missed some of my other new fav's the other day..so here they are..

-Koop- a swedish band that caught my attention because of just one song. Litrally, thats the only song of theirs iv heard.. 'Koop Island Blues feat. Ane Brun'..
when you first hear the song you think ohh this is jazz, and then you read the groups bio on google and find out its actually in the electronic category..weird! but great song!!
-Song to DL: Koop Island Blues

-La roux- This duo have fast become one of my favorites..its like theyr reviving the 80's but with a whole new sound ..brilliant vocals, a pitch that cannot be reached by most and strangely moving robo-electro-pop..the only area which they do seem to be a little lacking is the lyrics dept. (but then again i have high standards-and i do contradict myself here a little because i sang 'im going in for the kill..im doing it for a thril'..for the longest time, facebook status and all) :P
-Songs to DL: In for the Kill; Bulletproof

-Paloma Faith- not this is energetic soulful jazz at its best..her jazzy vocals take over her songs, giving them more power and you mroe goosebumps..Dont know much about her..havnt heard her commercially either-which is great, i usually end up liking them more when theyr less commercial- but shes great! take a listen..
-Song to DL: NewYork; Stone Cold Sober

-Feist [again another old artist that i recently rediscovered]- i never thought id say this..but i like this canadian(mostly because im racist towards canadians-no im just kidding haha my friend recently moved to canada, and its been on my 'make-fun-of-list' ever since) So great new album, very romantic dinner party music.(im referring to their previous album Let it Die) More specifically im in love with one of her songs, 'Mushaboom', that was in the soundtrack to '500 Days of Summer'. i may have to start an entirely new post to talk about the love for this song :P
-Song to DL: Mushaboom

-Adele Adkins- yea shes not brand new, but shes relatively new..and shes got MAD vocals!!
powerful vocals, a soulful voice that tells great stories through her lyrics..loves it! Did i emntion she has a brit accent? tee hee
-Songs to DL: Cold shoulder; Hometown Glory; Chasing pavements

-Sara Bareilles- i fell in love with her lyrics about a year ago..saw a few of her concerts on youtube, read her blog, followed her on twitter..and then realized i think i have a crush on her(im straight) like a girl crush, ebcause shes ME! i swear..shes soo me its ridiculous! and nobody besides me would understand what im talking about..her lyrics spoke to me, like revelations from up above..i believe every word of it, because it just falls into palce and makes complete sense to me..
She and Jason Mraz kept me amused through most of 2009..
-Songs to DL: Love song; Bottle it up; Gravity; Love on the Rocks;Undertow; One sweet love

the Tudors

One of my all time fav (recent) tv shows - THE TUDORS.

Its a drama based on the life and wives of Henry the eighth..
its not the best documentary based on the 17th century king and some of the facts have been twisted to fit the dramatic nature of the show, but cmon..if u want to see an accurate documentary, turn on the History channel..this is a mix of politics, love, war, sex, infedelity, beautiful people, unimaginable luxourious living and beautifully twisted facts all mashed up into one hell of an entertaining series.
I wont lie, i started watching it because of one of the charecters on the show, Henry's best friend Duke of Suffolk (Henry Caville) who is deliciously gorgeous..but i swear to you, i was HOOKED (in the true sense of the word) after the 3rd episode.
Great sets, language(im guessing) is pretty accurate, acting is GREAT in some roles(Queen Kathrine of Aragon; Anne Bolyn) but falls a little short in the case of the extras-who mostly look like jesters posing at Madam Tussauds, as wax statues in the background.

Ofcorse we all the know the storyline-Henry and his wives who he unceremoniously beheaded/killed/generally was very mean to ..but this goes into detail of the religious, political sexual nature of the times(exagerated ofcourse-otherwise it wouldnt be fun).
And the best part, esp if your like me and LOVE tv series, is the one hour long episodes..:)

It takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions...some of mine?
Started with attraction-bordering on obsession of Charles(Duke of Suffolk);
Hate and surprise at the shockingly shallow, selfish and ego-centric nature of king Henry; my heart went out toQueen Kathrine as her life shook and shattered before her; and then a weird sense of amusement and curiosity at the evil ways of Anne bolyn(she was probably one of my fav charecters in the series..
The rest..
Well i suggest you watch it and share ur thoughts on it with me.
